I wasn’t the biggest fan of We Were Liars, but I absolutely LOVED this book! I am not sure if it was because I went into this book knowing what to expect about Lockhart’s writing style, or if it was because I was familiar with the setting and some of the characters, but I was just gripped immediately.

Although this is the sequel, the majority of the events in this book take place before when We Were Liars was set, and focuses on the three sisters and their summer’s on their families’ private island. It is a story about loss, grief, emotions, family, love, sacrifice and lies. The story definitely builds up slowly in intensity and there were some twists that I did not see coming.

How accessible is it?

I really struggled to read We Were Liars - I found it difficult to tell when the author was using metaphors or describing real events, I thought the way the characters were described was so strange, and I found the fairytales confusing. But with this book I expected all of these things, and they didn’t phase me at all - I started actually really liking the writing style. It is written in the first person POV with a mixture of past and present tense, and I found this really engaging. The chapters are really short, and there are some chapters which are fairytales.
