Okay so I have really mixed feelings about this book. First of all - I had to stop reading it about 2 thirds of the way through because I just couldn’t understand it - I couldn’t follow the narrative and the language was so old-timey (not Bronte’s fault). I was studying this book at university at the time I tried to read this, so I watched the film and did a lot of research on it and I am familiar with the entire plot.
This was probably one of the first books I read where I really disliked basically all of the characters. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and if you like morally grey characters then you might love this. I started reading this book thinking it was going to be an Austen-type romance (because I went in blind and was misled by the pretty cover) but it certainly wasn’t a happy romance story. I would say the plot is fuelled by a romantic relationship, but it is more about bitterness, grief, revenge and hatred for past wrongs. I think this book often gets very polarised opinions and I can see why people might either love it or hate it - I remain on the fence!
How dyslexic friendly is it?
This is actually my first DNF review, and I did not find this to be a very accessible book at all. I found the language and the switches between narrators quite difficult to understand, and I got so stressed trying to read this that I wasn’t enjoying it at all. I do actually really like the plot, it is so sad and haunting and really enjoyed the movie (and the Kate Bush song).
