A feel-good, empowering and interesting romance story about Yinka - a British born Nigerian Christian in her 30s, who is constantly asked by her family why she isn’t in a relationship. After an awkward encounter with her newly engaged ex, and when an aunt publicly prays to God to save her from singleness, she makes a plan to get a boyfriend before her cousin’s wedding. The story is about how lies can spiral out of control, how changing yourself for someone is bound to end badly, the challenges of modern dating, and it gives a vibrant insight into Nigerian communities and culture in Britain. I’ve seen many people compare this to Bridget Jones's Diary - it's relatable, funny, cringey and comforting.
How accessible is it?
This was brilliant as an audiobook, I thought Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo was a fantastic voice artist so I really recommend listening to it. This book is told in the first person present tense (my favourite!) and the stream-of-consciousness style is written well so it isn’t so difficult to follow.
